Origin of Yellow Sapphire

Geographical sources and historical background

Ceylon Sri Lanka
Madagscar
Australia

Most yellow sapphires are mined in Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Australia, although several other countries have sapphire mines, notably Thailand. Sri Lankan sapphires are particularly renowned for their quality. While blue sapphires are associated with wisdom, tranquility and fidelity, the significance of yellow sapphires is more focused on energy, joy and vitality. These positive virtues often make yellow sapphire jewelry a good-luck charm.

Yellow sapphire is generally less saturated than its cousins, such as green sapphire. It is
light, very light, acid yellow, slightly orange... The hues are varied and may evoke other yellow stones, such as citrine, but not the rest: the physical properties of corundum, the sapphire family, are different from those of quartz. The brilliance is not at all the same.

The value and quality of a Yellow Sapphire

How do I know the value of a yellow sapphire?

The price of yellow sapphire depends on the number of carats and the quality. As a result, large yellow sapphires are cheaper than smaller, higher-quality stones.

The term "quality" conceals a complex reality in gemmology. It includes criteria of clarity and color. For the appraisal of a yellow sapphire, hue is an absolutely essential element. Canary-yellow stones are highly prized and not the most expensive sapphires. The purer the stone, i.e. with no inclusions visible to the naked eye, the higher its value. Imperfections can affect a stone's brilliance. They can be appreciated for jewelry, but yellow sapphires with greenish or orange hues are less expensive. Intense shades are more sought-after.

In any case, most of the time, yellow sapphire is less expensive than diamond and blue sapphire.

Processing and enhancing Yellow Sapphire

What are these treatments?

High-temperature heating This ancient method, which dates back to antiquity, involves heating sapphires in traditional furnaces up to 1,800°C.‍

Low-temperature heating Low-temperature heating: Performed between 800 and 1,200°C, this technique intensifies the color and transparency of sapphires while preserving their chemical structure. It is often used for stones with less intense colors, offering a clear improvement.

Beryllium heating: This treatment involves heating sapphires in the presence of beryllium, a chemical element that modifies their color but destabilizes the stone's chemical structure.

Bonnot Paris does not offer beryllium-treated stones.

Our Sourcing of Precious Stones

At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to providing the finest gemstones through rigorous and ethical sourcing.

We have developed three main sourcing methods to guarantee the quality and traceability of our gems: directly from the mines, via brokers and from renowned cutting centers. Find out more about our methods below.

LEVEL 1

Directly to the mine

We favor direct partnerships with the mines, enabling us to obtain raw gemstones directly from the source.

Our partnerships span the globe, notably in Africa (Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya), Vietnam and Sri Lanka. By carefully selecting gems according to their quality, we then have them cut by our workshops in France and Bangkok, ensuring total control over the transformation process.

LEVEL 2

Through local brokers

Our partnerships with international brokers enable us to acquire gemstones over a wide geographical area.

These brokers, based in Africa, Brazil, Colombia and Vietnam, scour vast territories to source gems that meet our strict criteria of quality, traceability and price. The rough stones are then cut in our specialized workshops in France and Bangkok.

LEVEL 3

From the main size centers

We have offices strategically located in Jaipur, Bangkok and Beruwala (Sri Lanka).

These centers enable us to purchase pre-cut gemstones, such as Zambian emeralds in Jaipur, or sapphires and other assorted gems in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Thanks to these offices, we can respond precisely to our customers' specific requirements, offering a wide range of top-quality stones.

More competitive prices

These three levels of sourcing enable us to offer you the best gemstones at the best prices, while guaranteeing their origin and exceptional quality.

We are committed to maintaining these standards to continue satisfying our most demanding customers.

LEVEL 4 - NOT APPLIED AT BONNOT PARIS

Through Reseller Merchants

The vast majority of traditional jewelers buy their stones from dealers in their own countries.

The result is a limited choice of products and, above all, prices that are far removed from market prices.

LEVEL 5 - NOT APPLIED AT BONNOT PARIS

At the jeweller's

Once again, the majority of jewellers tend to favour selling their own stones to the detriment of customers' desires.

By offering only a limited selection, the jeweler inevitably leads to a choice. At Bonnot Paris, it's the customer who chooses, and we source the ideal stone for his or her needs.

Certification and Ethics: Our Commitments

Certification and ethics are essential pillars of Maison Bonnot Paris. Every stone we offer is certified by renowned independent laboratories such as GIA, AIGS, ICA, LFG and SSEF.

This guarantees the authenticity and quality of our gems. What's more, we're proud to know the origin of the majority of the stones we offer.

Many of them come from brokers located in extraction areas we know well, ensuring impeccable traceability and ethics.

Although ethics are at the heart of our commitment, we recognize that there is still much to be done in this area.

We are determined to continue our efforts to guarantee the responsible and ethical provenance of every stone.
