Red spinel is the most sought-after variant of spinel in jewelry. Whatever its color, however, the stone is very hard (7.5/8 Mohs). Generally sourced from Burma or Sri Lanka, although
it can be found in many other countries, red spinel has a cubic crystal system. Its luster is vitreous to subadamantine, i.e. diamond-like, with a good refractive index.
Beautiful red spinel is mainly composed of aluminum, with traces of magnesium and more
or less chromium, which varies its color. Red spinel or ruby? Red spinel can bear a striking resemblance to ruby, so much so that in the past, spinel was often mistaken for ruby.
Paris jeweler and expert gemologist, maison Bonnot offers you the opportunity tobuy laboratory-certifiedred spinel. We obtain all our stones without intermediaries and can
provide you with the most essential information about them.
If you're looking for a red stone for a jewelry creation, red spinel has several assets. The main ones are its resistance to shocks, its similarity to ruby for lower prices, its relative
availability, as there are numerous deposits around the world, the variety of shades, as it can be darker, brighter or even pinkish, and the diversity of possible cuts (cushion cut, oval cut, pear cut...).
Beautiful jewelry is created, such as red spinel necklaces and rings, but other red stones may also appeal to you, such as certain spessartite garnets. Spinel also comes in pink, with Mahenge spinel, but also in black, gray, blue, mauve, violet, green...
In lithotherapy, rough red spinel is reputed to bring serenity, courage and help improve relationships. Today, red spinel 's main meaning is love, as well as passion and fidelity. In ancient times, however, it was considered a protective stone that could attract happiness.
Most of the time, a
cut red spinel will be more affordable than a ruby. Depending on the number of carats and the quality of the cut, as well as the level of purity and intensity of color, the price of a red spinel can sometimes climb. Some stones are exceptional.
It is therefore possible to buy a red spinel of 1 carat or a little more for €1,000, €3,000, €5,000, €10,000... These wide variations
in price can also be explained by the presence or absence of treatments (other than heating the stones, which is almost never carried out on spinels), the country of origin and the presence or absence of a certificate.
