Blue zircon (zirconium silicate) is a heated natural stone from the silicate group. It is often yellow to brown when first extracted. Heat treatment gives it its bright or lighter blue color. It is a stone of great brilliance, evoking even the brilliance of diamond. Its hardness, however, is lower, ranging from 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.
Zircons are mined in Australia, Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. The color varies according to the region. It can come from other countries, but Cambodian blue zircon is highly prized, more specifically from the Ratanakiri province.
Please note that zircon is not the same as cubic zirconia, or zirconium oxide, the synthetic laboratory stone used as a diamond substitute. A white zircon also looks like a diamond.
For your purchase of blue zircon, maison Bonnot provides you with a laboratory certificate to authenticate it.
Zircon has been known since antiquity and is historically referred to as a "fine stone", like aquamarine. It was formally identified by a mineralogist in 1783. Blue in color, it is now widely used in jewelry. Blue zircon rings are frequently in white or yellow gold, with or without diamonds.
The mining and marketing of Cambodian blue zircon is relatively recent. It has been gaining in popularity since the 2010s.
Natural blue zircon is used in lithotherapy to promote inner peace, return positive energies or get rid of sadness. Unlike many stones, the meaning of blue zircon is not clearly established in tradition. For example, loyalty is associated with blue sapphire.
Thepurchase of a blue zircon is not usually motivated by classical symbolism, but rather by its sparkle, beauty and affordability.
Due to its high refractive index, a blue zircon is an extremely brilliant stone. In addition, blue zircons for sale to collectors or for jewelry creation are extremely clear. That said, as with any other stone, a blue zircon can only be authenticated by gemmological expertise.
In terms of color alone, it is possible to confuse this gem, to the naked eye, with specimens of blue topaz or sometimes blue spinel. The blue of zircon is not always the same. However, these stones are less brilliant.
Finally, blue zircon is a rather dense stone, a factor that comes into play in its valuation and makes it a little "heavier" than many others.
While blue zircon is a beautiful stone with remarkable sparkle, it is also appreciated for its relatively affordable price per carat . Beware of the term "imitation". Blue or white zircon is not a "fake diamond". It is a mineral in its own right and is not sold at the same price. Zircons may look like diamonds, but they are not mined to imitate them.
