Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl, a relatively rare mineral composed of beryllium oxide and aluminum. This stone is famous for its color change in response to light.
Due to chromium's absorption of light, under natural lighting it appears in green tones. Under artificial light, red tones are visible. It also changes color depending on the angle of observation, much like tourmalines, since alexandrite is also characterized by pleochroism.
Thus, the color of alexandrite is green (blue-green, green-yellow and other shades varying mainly according to provenance), as well as red (or purple, red-violet, red-brown...), depending on the lighting.
With a hardness of 8.5 Mohs and rarely treated, alexandrite stone is highly prized for jewelry. Today, it is sourced mainly from Brazil and countries such as Madagascar and Sri Lanka, Australia and India. For an original stone purchase, take a look at our multicolored sapphires. Our gemstones are sourced without intermediaries.
Alexandrite takes its name from Tsar Alexander II, emperor of Russia from 1855 to 1881, who adored this stone. It was first identified in Russia at the beginning of the 19th century, but there are different versions concerning the mineralogists who found it. Today, although alexandrite mines are depleted in Russia, specimens from this country remain the most coveted, for their often exceptional quality.
Raw alexandrite in lithotherapy can be used to enhance virtues such as kindness and compassion. This stone is associated with positive thoughts, the will to move forward serenely, to rise above hardship, as well as with harmony and love. It is attributed with numerous emotional and physical benefits. Alexandrite is also a traditional good-luck stone.
We can help you buy alexandrite, have a piece of jewelry created or invest in a stone. There are many criteria to consider for this rare stone, whose prices can be very high.
Alongside color, carat, clarity and cut quality, as with any stone, color change is a determining factor in the price of an alexandrite. The most precious alexandrites offer quite radical color changes. There is a clear distinction between green and red. The larger the alexandrite, the less noticeable this phenomenon. But with a few exceptions, alexandrites are relatively small stones.
As far as color is concerned, the most coveted alexandrites have no secondary color and feature a very clean red and green. In addition, it can be much more expensive tobuy alexandrite from Brazil or Russia, as these countries are reputed to have produced superb specimens (the mines in Brazil are also tending to empty now). Like diamonds, some cost tens of thousands of euros per carat.
Take no chances and buy an alexandrite with certificate of authenticity, whether you want to have an alexandrite ring created or obtain a specimen for a stone collection. Many gems may resemble it, such as some garnets, but none change color like it does!
