A multicolored sapphire is a true sapphire of the corundum family, with several hues that can be close or contrasting. The most common variety is the two-tone sapphire. Some rarer varieties feature 3 colors. The color zones may be distinctly separate or gradually blend into each other, with transitional colors. It is not impossible to find sapphires with more than 3 colors, depending on the stone's formation.
They can come from all sorts of sapphire-mining countries, such as Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Australia, the United States and Kenya are relatively important sources of multicolored sapphires.
Other sapphire varieties, such as teal sapphire, have several colors that are not clearly separated. If you would like to buy a multicolored sapphire, please note that our stones are systematically certified by a laboratory.
The combination of blue, green and yellow is one of the most common on multicolored sapphires. Many green and yellow sapphires are also available. The most sought-after have three different colors or very rare mixtures, such as violet (and similar shades) with blue.
Yellow is widespread on these polychrome sapphires, indicating the presence of iron, often with blue, which can create shades of green, and sometimes with other colors, such as orange or pink. As with yellow sapphires, this hue can be more or less intense.
Generally speaking, jewellers look for shades of multicoloured sapphire that are neither too light nor too dark, so that the different areas of the stone are clearly visible. To create a multicolored sapphire ring, a wedding band, or even another piece of jewelry such as a bracelet or necklace, the shades of the stone are obviously very important, but so is the cut.
Indeed, the size of the sapphire determines the location of the different color zones. In addition to the carat weight criterion, the most precious multicolored sapphires are generally those whose colors separate towards the center, thanks to the way the gem has been cut.
As hard as any other sapphire (9 on the Mohs scale), a multicolored sapphire is an excellent choice for creating a timeless ring. Need help buying multicolored sapphires ? As a jewelry house and gem expert, Bonnot Paris can advise you.
Multicolored sapphires are highly original stones. However, they were relatively uncoveted until a few years ago, when less conventional stones, such as spinels, became more attractive.
Sapphires with several colors forming a gradation, such as padparadscha, are traditionally more sought-after in the jewelry world.
Unexpected, even surprising, a blue and yellow sapphire, or a blue, yellow and green sapphire, is a stone that is particularly attractive for the creation of personalized jewelry and daring rings. It's the utter uniqueness of each gem that also attracts passionate collectors.
