Rhodolite garnet is a stone that can be recognized by its color, which varies from purplish-red to red, but is sometimes fuchsia or almost violet. A silicate of iron, magnesium and aluminum, it is defined as a mixture of almandine and pyrope, varieties of garnet. In mineralogy, it's called pyrope-almandin garnet.
But it often contains other varieties, such as spessartite. Unlike other gemstones, garnets are distinguished by their variety, which changes according to composition.

The way the light scatters tends to have a strong influence on value, as it contributes to the beauty of these stones. Rhodolite garnet has a higher price per carat when it has an intense violet color and beautiful brilliance. Note that this stone is rarely treated.
Garnets have been known and used since antiquity, but the different varieties were identified during the 19ᵉ century. Before the development of mineralogy, garnets were not well distinguished from other stones. Rhodolite was discovered in 1882, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The name rhodolite comes from the Greek "rhodo", meaning rose.
Tanzania and Sri Lanka are reputed to supply the finest rhodolite garnets. Superb specimens are also found in Madagascar, Mozambique, Kenya and Malawi, and there are mines in Sri Lanka, India, the USA and Brazil. Their hardness ranges from 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, making them an excellent choice for engagement rings.
In the past, some rhodolite garnets were mistaken for rubies. Today, they are sometimes sought after for this resemblance, while offering a more affordable price. And rhodolite garnet rings come in a variety of shapes, because this stone can tolerate all kinds of sizes.
Rhodolite garnet stands for courage, inner serenity and joie de vivre. This stone is said to have a positive effect on emotions, in lithotherapy, since it is associated with values such as motivation, dynamism and self-confidence, as is tsavorite garnet. All garnets are considered protective stones.

For your rhodolite garnet purchases, Bonnot Paris only offers stones accompanied by a laboratory certificate for authentication. Although chemical analysis is ideal, some of the characteristics of genuine, good-quality rhodolite can be seen with the naked eye. These stones are often brighter than other garnets. Those from Tanzania also tend to change hue, depending on whether the light is natural or artificial. Good saturation, absence of inclusions visible to the naked eye and brilliance are important quality factors.
