La tourmaline est une pierre fascinante et très riche : il ne s'agit en réalité pas seulement d'une pierre, mais d'un groupe de minéraux très divers, avec une dureté de 7 à 7,5 sur l'échelle de Mohs, et qui peut présenter toutes les couleurs. Les tourmalines de différentes couleurs ont souvent un nom spécifique sur le marché : la verdelite pour la verte, la rubellite pour la rouge-rose, l'indigolite pour la bleue ou la dravite pour la tourmaline jaune.
La tourmaline la plus célèbre est la tourmaline Paraiba, bleue à vert néon. Découvertes dans les années 1980 dans la mine de Paraiba au Brésil, ces tourmalines figurent aujourd'hui parmi les pierres les plus prisées au monde. Pierres de naissance du mois d'octobre, certaines tourmalines particulières sont multicolores et présentent une forte zonation de couleur, ce qui les rend très populaires, notamment auprès des collectionneurs. Les principaux sites d'exploitation sont le Brésil et le Sri Lanka.
De plus, plusieurs pierres qui étaient initialement considérées comme des rubis se sont révélées être des tourmalines. C'est le cas, par exemple, de la tourmaline rubellite de la couronne de saint Venceslas, le joyau de la couronne bohémienne.
