Moonstone has been used in jewelry since Antiquity. It is prized for its brilliance, evoking that of our natural satellite. The variety most commonly used in jewelry is white. On ringsOn rings, necklaces and earrings, it often has a pale blue, silver or pearly sheen. Its name derives from this distinctive shimmering effect, known in gemology as "adularescence" or the "Schiller effect".
Made from feldspar, a mineral of the tectosilicate family, moonstone, moonstone or adularia comes in many colors, in addition to white. Blue moonstones are highly prized in jewelry, as are gray, orange, pink and brown hues. Green moonstones are less common.
A transparent or semi-transparent stone with an opalescent luster, its hardness is 6 on the Mohs scale. It is mined in many places, including Madagascar, Myanmar (Burma), Australia, India and Tanzania. Today, it is mainly sourced from Sri Lanka.
On our site, you can buy a moonstone of jewellery quality. These specimens, intended for the creation of unique pieces, are distinguished by the quality of their adularescence, which is particularly intense, and their faceted cut, which enhances their brilliance. These are not brilliant stones, but have a "shimmering", if not pearly or satin-like lustre. The effect is amplified by the facets.
Jewelry moonstones are highly sought-after when they are virtually transparent. Those with blue reflections or multicolored (rainbow) adularescence are also coveted. Jewelers and hobbyists also seek out some very rare green moonstones.
Moonstone has a long and rich history. It is a sacred stone in certain civilizations, associated with divinities and attributed many powers, depending on the culture.

For your information, jewelry enthusiasts, gemologists and jewelers tend to look for moonstones that are fairly transparent, rather than milky, with no inclusions visible to the naked eye and ideally centered reflections, with sharp, vivid adularescence. These specimens are more valuable with bluish moonstones.
As well as the quality of the cut, provenance can also be important. Sri Lanka is renowned for the quality of its moonstones.
