Origin of Teal Sapphire

Geographical sources and historical background

Madagascar
Tanzania
Australia
The exact date of teal sapphire's discovery remains uncertain, as it is a variant of the corundum family, which includes blue sapphires and rubies. Corundum has been known and appreciated for millennia, with traces dating back to ancient civilizations such as the Greeks, Romans and Persians. Recognition of teal sapphire as a distinct variety probably developed over time, as people began to recognize its unique combination of blue and green hues. Teal sapphires are found in several locations around the world, each bringing its own distinctive characteristics to the gemstone. Major sources include: Madagascar: Known for producing a wide range of colors, teal sapphires from Madagascar are admired for their vibrant, balanced blend of blue and green hues. Madagascar sapphires come in a variety of colors. Tanzania: Tanzania's teal sapphires often feature a deep, rich teal color, and the country is also home to the famous Umba Valley, where a range of unique sapphire colors can be found. Australia: With a long history of sapphire mining, Australia offers teal sapphires with a darker hue and intense saturation, often closer to the blue end of the spectrum. Nigeria: More recently, new teal sapphire deposits have been discovered in Nigeria, adding a new source to the growing list of producing regions. Nigerian teal sapphires tend to feature darker, more saturated hues, enriching the diversity available on the market. As the popularity of teal sapphires increases, more deposits are likely to be discovered, contributing to the gem's fascinating history and appeal.

The value and quality of Saphir Teal

How do I know the value of a teal sapphire?

Teal sapphires, like other gemstones, have their price and value determined by factors such as color, clarity, cut and carat weight. Generally speaking, stones with a vivid, well-balanced mix of blue and green hues are more valuable. For example, a 2-carat teal sapphire with a striking balance of blue and green hues could be valued at around €1,200 per carat, while a stone with a less desirable color distribution might sell for around €800 per carat. A high level of clarity also contributes to the gem's value. A 3-carat teal sapphire with exceptional clarity and no visible inclusions could be valued at €1,500 per carat, while a stone with notable inclusions could be valued at €1,000 per carat. The cut of the stone also plays a significant role, with a well-cut 1.5-carat teal sapphire that enhances color and brilliance fetching a price of €1,400 per carat, while a poorly cut stone could fetch as little as €900 per carat. Finally, a higher carat weight increases value, as a larger 4-carat teal sapphire with desirable attributes could be valued at €2,000 per carat, while a smaller 1-carat stone with similar qualities might sell for only €1,200 per carat. The rarity of teal sapphires also contributes to their higher price compared to other sapphires, making them a desirable and valuable investment. Note: These examples are for illustrative purposes and should not be taken as exact price guidelines. Prices may vary according to market, stone source and other factors.

Processing and enhancing Saphir Teal

What are these treatments?

The process of heating sapphire is a common practice, carried out in a high-temperature furnace (up to around 1,800°C) or using more traditional methods. This technique, used since ancient times, aims to correct natural imperfections, such as inclusions, as well as to improve color intensity or homogeneity. There are several types of heating treatment, including low-temperature heating and beryllium heating. - Low-temperature heating: This treatment, carried out at moderate temperatures (between 800 and 1,200°C), improves the color and transparency of the sapphire while preserving its structure. It is generally applied to stones with less intense colors, offering a softer enhancement. - Beryllium heating: This process involves heating sapphires in the presence of beryllium, a chemical element that can modify the color of stones, notably to intensify yellow or orange hues. Although effective, this treatment is controversial because it further modifies the chemical composition of the sapphire, which may displease collectors. For this reason, Bonnot Paris refuses to select gemstones treated with beryllium.

Our Sourcing of Precious Stones

At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to providing the finest gemstones through rigorous and ethical sourcing.

We have developed three main sourcing methods to guarantee the quality and traceability of our gems: directly from the mines, via brokers and from renowned cutting centers. Find out more about our methods below.

LEVEL 1

Directly to the mine

We favor direct partnerships with the mines, enabling us to obtain raw gemstones directly from the source.

Our partnerships span the globe, notably in Africa (Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya), Vietnam and Sri Lanka. By carefully selecting gems according to their quality, we then have them cut by our workshops in France and Bangkok, ensuring total control over the transformation process.

LEVEL 2

Through local brokers

Our partnerships with international brokers enable us to acquire gemstones over a wide geographical area.

These brokers, based in Africa, Brazil, Colombia and Vietnam, scour vast territories to source gems that meet our strict criteria of quality, traceability and price. The rough stones are then cut in our specialized workshops in France and Bangkok.

LEVEL 3

From the main size centers

We have offices strategically located in Jaipur, Bangkok and Beruwala (Sri Lanka).

These centers enable us to purchase pre-cut gemstones, such as Zambian emeralds in Jaipur, or sapphires and other assorted gems in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Thanks to these offices, we can respond precisely to our customers' specific requirements, offering a wide range of top-quality stones.

More competitive prices

These three levels of sourcing enable us to offer you the best gemstones at the best prices, while guaranteeing their origin and exceptional quality.

We are committed to maintaining these standards to continue satisfying our most demanding customers.

LEVEL 4 - NOT APPLIED AT BONNOT PARIS

Through Reseller Merchants

The vast majority of traditional jewelers buy their stones from dealers in their own countries.

The result is a limited choice of products and, above all, prices that are far removed from market prices.

LEVEL 5 - NOT APPLIED AT BONNOT PARIS

At the jeweller's

Once again, the majority of jewellers tend to favour selling their own stones to the detriment of customers' desires.

By offering only a limited selection, the jeweler inevitably leads to a choice. At Bonnot Paris, it's the customer who chooses, and we source the ideal stone for his or her needs.

Certification and Ethics: Our Commitments

Certification and ethics are essential pillars of Maison Bonnot Paris. Every stone we offer is certified by renowned independent laboratories such as GIA, AIGS, ICA, LFG and SSEF.

This guarantees the authenticity and quality of our gems. What's more, we're proud to know the origin of the majority of the stones we offer.

Many of them come from brokers located in extraction areas we know well, ensuring impeccable traceability and ethics.

Although ethics are at the heart of our commitment, we recognize that there is still much to be done in this area.

We are determined to continue our efforts to guarantee the responsible and ethical provenance of every stone.

François took the time to understand my needs and preferences, and presented me with a selection of stones that were each more beautiful than the last. The design process was a true collaboration.
