In Latin, sapphire is called "sapphirus". This term derives from the ancient Greek "sappheiros", which referred to a blue stone.
Origin of Sapphire
Geographical sources and historical background
Sapphire has been known for a long time, although it was often confused with lapis lazuli in the past. It was in 1798 that sapphire was formally identified as a corundum by two French and English mineralogists.
There are three types of rock: sedimentary, magmatic and metamorphic. Sapphire is extracted from the last two, on several continents. Some mines are rich in sapphires of particular colors, specific shades of blue or excellent quality.
Sapphire from Ceylon(Sri Lanka) is renowned for its quality, enabling the creation of jewelry. Others, such as those from Burma, Kashmir in India and Madagascar, are sought-after for jewelry. Mines are also found in Thailand, Cambodia, Australia, Brazil and the United States.
Some sapphire deposits, such as those in the Puy-de-Dôme region, are not exploited because the quality is not up to scratch.

What are these treatments?
High-temperature heating High-temperature heating has been used since ancient times, in traditional furnaces reaching temperatures of up to 1,800°C.
Low-temperature heating Low-temperature heating: This treatment is generally carried out between 800 and 1,200°C, and enhances the color and transparency of the sapphire while preserving its structure. It is often used for stones of less intense color, offering a subtle enhancement.
Beryllium heating This method involves heating sapphires in the presence of beryllium, a chemical element that modifies their color, in particular to intensify yellow or orange hues. Although effective, this technique is controversial, as it alters the chemical composition of the sapphire.
For this reason, Bonnot Paris chooses not to select stones that have undergone this beryllium treatment.

We favor direct partnerships with the mines, enabling us to obtain raw gemstones directly from the source.
Our partnerships span the globe, notably in Africa (Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya), Vietnam and Sri Lanka. By carefully selecting gems according to their quality, we then have them cut by our workshops in France and Bangkok, ensuring total control over the transformation process.
Through local brokers
Our partnerships with international brokers enable us to acquire gemstones over a wide geographical area.
These brokers, based in Africa, Brazil, Colombia and Vietnam, scour vast territories to source gems that meet our strict criteria of quality, traceability and price. The rough stones are then cut in our specialized workshops in France and Bangkok.
From the main size centers
We have offices strategically located in Jaipur, Bangkok and Beruwala (Sri Lanka).
These centers enable us to purchase pre-cut gemstones, such as Zambian emeralds in Jaipur, or sapphires and other assorted gems in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Thanks to these offices, we can respond precisely to our customers' specific requirements, offering a wide range of top-quality stones.
