Origin of Blue Sapphire

Geographical sources and historical background

Ceylon Sri-Lanka
Madagascar
Cashmere
Blue sapphires are mined in a number of countries, each with its own reputation and special characteristics: Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka remains the main supplier of blue sapphires on today's market, with centuries-old extraction. The emblematic shade of these gems is in fact christened "Ceylon Blue". Madagascar : Today, this island has become the second-largest source of sapphires, renowned for the high quality of its stones. However, supply is sometimes hampered by government moratoria on exports. Kashmir: Although less well known to the general public, this region has supplied some of the world's most sumptuous sapphires. Production is now anecdotal, giving these gems exceptional rarity. Australia: Sapphires are mainly mined in New South Wales and Queensland. Blue sapphires are also found in Burma, Thailand and Montana in the USA, each offering unique characteristics that enrich the global market for these gems.

The value and quality of a Blue Sapphire

How do I know the value of a blue sapphire?

The value of blue sapphire varies considerably according to several key criteria: color intensity, clarity, weight, origin and rarity. Crucially, the price of sapphire increases exponentially with its weight, as the larger the stone, the rarer it is. For example, a good-quality 1-carat heated blue sapphire will cost around €1,000 per carat, while a 3-carat blue sapphire of equivalent quality will cost around €2,000 per carat. Heat treatment also has a major influence on the price of blue sapphires. Indeed, an unheated stone will cost around 30% more for stones of 1 to 2 carats, and this price can be multiplied by 10 or more for higher weights. Today, the most expensive and rarest blue sapphires come from Kashmir. The finest of them trade at tens of thousands of dollars per carat. In 2021, a 27-carat Kashmir blue sapphire sold at auction for 2.1 million euros. Other highly sought-after and much more affordable blue sapphires come from Sri Lanka and Madagascar, which offer very good quality. In this case, for a stone of the same quality, a blue sapphire from Sri Lanka will be more expensive than a blue sapphire from Madagascar. Bonnot Paris can help you choose the most beautiful blue sapphire to suit your budget and your unique jewelry project. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Processing and enhancing Blue Sapphire

What are these treatments?

Heat treatment of sapphires is a frequently used method, carried out at high temperatures in furnaces up to 1,800°C, or using more traditional techniques. This procedure, practiced since ancient times, aims to correct natural imperfections, such as inclusions, and to improve the color, intensity and uniformity of the stones. There are several types of heat treatment, including low-temperature heating and beryllium heating. Low-temperature heating: This treatment is performed at moderate temperatures, generally between 800 and 1,200°C, and improves the color and transparency of the sapphire while preserving its structure. It is often used for stones of less intense color, offering a subtle enhancement. Beryllium heating: This method involves heating sapphires in the presence of beryllium, a chemical element that modifies their color, in particular to intensify yellow or orange hues. Although this technique is effective, it is controversial, as it alters the chemical composition of the sapphire, which may displease some collectors. For this reason, Bonnot Paris chooses not to select stones that have undergone this beryllium treatment.

Our Sourcing of Precious Stones

At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to providing the finest gemstones through rigorous and ethical sourcing.

We have developed three main sourcing methods to guarantee the quality and traceability of our gems: directly from the mines, via brokers and from renowned cutting centers. Find out more about our methods below.

LEVEL 1

Directly to the mine

We favor direct partnerships with the mines, enabling us to obtain raw gemstones directly from the source.

Our partnerships span the globe, notably in Africa (Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya), Vietnam and Sri Lanka. By carefully selecting gems according to their quality, we then have them cut by our workshops in France and Bangkok, ensuring total control over the transformation process.

LEVEL 2

Through local brokers

Our partnerships with international brokers enable us to acquire gemstones over a wide geographical area.

These brokers, based in Africa, Brazil, Colombia and Vietnam, scour vast territories to source gems that meet our strict criteria of quality, traceability and price. The rough stones are then cut in our specialized workshops in France and Bangkok.

LEVEL 3

From the main size centers

We have offices strategically located in Jaipur, Bangkok and Beruwala (Sri Lanka).

These centers enable us to purchase pre-cut gemstones, such as Zambian emeralds in Jaipur, or sapphires and other assorted gems in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Thanks to these offices, we can respond precisely to our customers' specific requirements, offering a wide range of top-quality stones.

More competitive prices

These three levels of sourcing enable us to offer you the best gemstones at the best prices, while guaranteeing their origin and exceptional quality.

We are committed to maintaining these standards to continue satisfying our most demanding customers.

LEVEL 4 - NOT APPLIED AT BONNOT PARIS

Through Reseller Merchants

The vast majority of traditional jewelers buy their stones from dealers in their own countries.

The result is a limited choice of products and, above all, prices that are far removed from market prices.

LEVEL 5 - NOT APPLIED AT BONNOT PARIS

At the jeweller's

Once again, the majority of jewellers tend to favour selling their own stones to the detriment of customers' desires.

By offering only a limited selection, the jeweler inevitably leads to a choice. At Bonnot Paris, it's the customer who chooses, and we source the ideal stone for his or her needs.

Certification and Ethics: Our Commitments

Certification and ethics are essential pillars of Maison Bonnot Paris. Every stone we offer is certified by renowned independent laboratories such as GIA, AIGS, ICA, LFG and SSEF.

This guarantees the authenticity and quality of our gems. What's more, we're proud to know the origin of the majority of the stones we offer.

Many of them come from brokers located in extraction areas we know well, ensuring impeccable traceability and ethics.

Although ethics are at the heart of our commitment, we recognize that there is still much to be done in this area.

We are determined to continue our efforts to guarantee the responsible and ethical provenance of every stone.
