Oval sapphire
Find out why oval sapphires have become a must-have jewelry item, why you should choose them and what you need to know to find the perfect stone.
Oval sapphire: a widespread classic shape
The oval sapphire is the most popular shape in jewelry. This is particularly true of blue sapphires, although they can also be round, square, cushion or pear-shaped, to mention a few other common shapes. Sapphires in other colors are often oval-shaped, too, but you can see more fantasy with some, such as purple sapphire.
The appearance of oval sapphires varies according to the cut. This is why you'll find oval sapphires with different numbers of facets. Brilliant-cut sapphires are sought-after, as they showcase the stone with maximum brilliance. The cabochon cut is another example: a stone with no facets and a domed top. In this case, brilliance is not desired. But most oval sapphires do have facets.
A gemstone can be of varying quality, as can its cut. Many stones are oval-shaped or oval-cut, a style that came to the fore in the 20th century.
Why choose an oval sapphire for a ring?
We've seen that oval sapphires are generally faceted, for a beautiful sparkle. Oval stones also appear larger than other stones of the same weight. If the oval shape is popular for sapphires and other gems, including diamonds, it's also because it adapts to multiple jewelry styles. For a sapphire engagement ring, you can have an imposing stone for less, and choose both modern and vintage styles.
Note that there are different oval shapes of sapphire, as the stones can be more or less elongated, depending on the ratio between length and width. A sapphire and diamond oval daisy ring commonly has a moderate, rather than elongated, oval, but with custom ring design, this depends on taste.

Oval sapphire ring styles
In addition to the oval sapphire cabochon ring, which has a polished surface, the rings have a shiny appearance, frequently enhanced by the presence of diamonds. However, this is not mandatory. It is possible to create beautiful oval sapphire solitaire rings without diamonds, especially if you like contemporary styles. Also, an oval sapphire can be accompanied by small round sapphires on an engagement ring, or by two other oval sapphires for a trilogy ring. One of the most sparkling is the halo ring, with several small diamonds surrounding the sapphire.
With or without diamonds, a sapphire looks great on any gold:
- a white gold ring with oval sapphire: modern, elegant and luminous
- a yellow gold ring: warm and timeless
- a rose gold ring: softer, more romantic and more contemporary
