Rubellite tourmaline has been known in Europe since Roman times. For centuries, however, its true nature was misunderstood, as was the case with other tourmalines, which were confused with different gems. These stones were not scientifically identified until the early 19th century.
Tourmalines enjoyed extraordinary success in China in the early 20ᵉ century, before falling somewhat into oblivion. It was not until the 1980s/90s and the discovery of Paraíba tourmaline that enthusiasm returned, including for rubellite.
Rubellite tourmaline is a pink or red tourmaline, some of the rarest colors in this group of gems. The word comes from the Latin rubellus, meaning reddish. Although it can be used more generally, the term rubellite generally refers to well-saturated tourmalines of bright pink to red. High-quality, very vivid rubellite is particularly rare. They often come from Africa, notably Nigeria or Mozambique. A "pink tourmaline" will tend to be lighter in color.
Rubellite tourmaline is a pink to red variety of elbaite, rich in iron and aluminum. It may contain inclusions, but these are not visible to the naked eye on high-quality stones. Some of the finest rubellites rival the prestige and beauty of pink sapphires.
In fact, they are increasingly sought-after for unique creations for special events, such as engagements and wedding anniversaries.
Hardness ranges from 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, allowing rubellite to be cut in a variety of shapes. For your rubellite purchase, Bonnot Paris selects the best stones without intermediaries, giving you excellent traceability. You also get a certificate of authenticity.

Rubellite is a tourmaline associated with positive emotions, fulfillment and love in all its forms. In lithotherapy, raw rubellite tourmaline is considered a powerful healing stone, helping to restore energy, release harmful emotions and maintain balance. It is used to combat stress and fatigue. As is often the case in this field, rough rubellite is combined with 'other stones.
If you're looking to buy rubellite tourmaline, be aware that prices can vary greatly, more than for other stones, due to the different hues that influence value, but also to the possibility of inclusions, the multiple countries where these stones can be mined, some of which are reputed to supply specific varieties. Then there are carats and cut types.
Rubellites are among the most expensive tourmalines. Prices rise even higher when they are free of brown hues and visible inclusions. The same applies to the price per carat of some beautifully cut, pinkish-red rubellite tourmalines (which can resemble rubies).
In addition to bright pink tourmalines from Africa, Brazilian rubellites from the Minas Gerais mines are sought-after for their bold colors, and can fetch considerable prices.
