All you need to know about Saphir Teal

Within the sapphire family, one color variety is gaining in popularity: teal sapphire. In this practical guide, we'll share with you everything you need to know about this gemstone so you can make your choice and create a magnificent piece of bespoke jewelry with it. Follow François Deprez, our founder and expert in rough and cut gemstones, on this incredible adventure.

What is Saphir Teal?

Teal sapphire is a member of the corundum family, like ruby and other sapphire colors. Its uniqueness lies in its blue-green or green-blue color.

This shade began to gain popularity in the 2000s, notably with the discovery of new deposits in Madagascar and Tanzania.

Today, this stone is a must-have in jewelry, and is often used as an alternative to blue sapphire for engagement rings. It's a stone we know well at Bonnot, as we source them directly from the mines to offer our customers the best choice.

What colors does Saphir Teal come in?

The color palette of teal sapphire is quite varied. It can range from moss green to azure blue, but its most popular color is a synthesis of blue and green. A unique combination reminiscent of duck blue.

The colors of teal sapphire are the same as those of other sapphire colors, due to the presence of impurities within the stone. In the case of teal sapphire, these are traces of titanium and iron. Titanium provides the blue color and iron the yellow or green. Depending on the predominance of titanium or iron, the stone will have different shades. Each stone is therefore unique. Where do Saphir Teal come from?

Teal sapphire can be found in many parts of the world, but not all regions offer the same level of quality. Here is a list of the main mining regions:

Tanzania :

Many teal sapphires on the market come from Tanzania. The country produces some of the finest stones of this variety, notably in the Umba Valley. They have the particularity of having an "open" color, less dark than other sources.

Madagascar :

Like Tanzania, many teal sapphires are found in this country. Madagascar has the distinction of supplying the majority of teal sapphires over 2 carats. Teal sapphires are mainly found in the north of the country.

Nigeria :

New teal sapphire deposits have been discovered in Nigeria in recent years. Teal sapphires from this region tend to be darker in color.

Teal sapphires are also found in other countries, such as Australia and Montana in the USA.

At Bonnot, we source our teal sapphires mainly from Tanzania and Madagascar.

How to choose a Saphir Teal?

Choosing a teal sapphire can sometimes be complex, as there is a lot of information to consider in order to make an informed decision. Here are the main points to consider when making your choice:

Color:

This is the most important aspect. There are as many colors as there are tastes. You'll have to choose between a stone that's more blue, more green, darker or lighter. To make the right choice, you can take into account the style of the person who will receive the jewel, their skin color and possibly the color of their eyes. In any case, there's no wrong color and therefore no wrong choice.

Clarity:

As with every stone, it is advisable to appreciate the clarity of the stone before acquiring one. Compared to other sapphire colors, teal sapphire is easier to find with few or no inclusions, even if the stone has not been heat-treated. At Bonnot, we only offer teal sapphires with few or no inclusions.

Treatments :

Many sapphires are heat-treated to improve clarity and color. For teal sapphires, it's quite different. Indeed, these sapphires are generally found in fine quality and rarely need to be treated. This is why treatment has little impact on the price of this variety of sapphire, unlike blue sapphire in particular.

If you have any hesitation in making the right choice, don't hesitate to contact us - we'll be delighted to help. We offer a variety of shapes, including oval sapphires.

How much does a teal sapphire cost?

As with every variety of stone, the price of teal sapphire can vary according to several factors: weight, treatment, clarity and color.

For teal sapphire, treatment or clarity have relatively little impact on price, as these stones are relatively easier to find with good clarity and without treatment than other sapphire colors.

Color and weight will have a significant impact on price. The price of teal sapphire will increase exponentially with weight.

For a beautifully colored teal sapphire, prices can start at €500 per carat for a 1-carat stone and exceed €1,000 per carat for a 3-carat stone. Some exceptionally fine stones can exceed this price.

A Teal Sapphire engagement ring?

Like sapphires in other colors, teal sapphire is an excellent choice for an engagement ring or a birthstone ring. It is a very hard stone (9 on the Mohs scale) and is a beautiful alternative to the traditional blue sapphire. This stone will bring a touch of modernity to any setting.
