What is my birthstone?
Birthstones are part of ancient beliefs, as they are mentioned in the Bible. In 1912, jewelers in the United States drew up a list associating a stone with a particular month. The list has been amended several times, and is subject to many interpretations, which explains why there are slight variations.
Birthstones for the twelve months of the year
January: garnet. Garnet is the birthstone of January, and can be spessartite garnet, which is orange-red, the most common, or other colors such as tsavorite garnet, which is green. Traditionally, these stones representpositive energy and great virtues, such as courage, fidelity or truth. They are used in jewelry as symbols of love.
February: amethyst. Embodying serenity, balance and sincerity, amethyst is also the stone of creativity. It is a type of quartz whose color ranges from mauve to intense violet. It is often used in lithotherapy to relieve stress.
Mars: aquamarine. Aquamarine is a gem with various shades of blue, ideal for a piece of jewelry celebrating a new milestone, such as an engagement or wedding anniversary, for example, a pewter wedding band. It symbolizes hope, renewal and loyalty, and is said to bring inner peace.
April: diamond. A symbol of strength, the diamond is the birthstone of the month of April, which, of course, is also the embodiment of eternal love! A precious stone of commitment par excellence, it is prized for engagement rings, but also adorns many other pieces of jewelry, adding sparkle and shine.
May: emerald. Emerald is a precious stone shrouded in myth and worn by many of history's great figures. A birthstone for the month of May, it is also associated with wedding anniversaries, notably on a 20-year wedding ring, and is a symbol of honesty and wisdom, balance and fertility.
June: pearl. Depending on the origin of the birthstone lists, June natives are represented by pearls, symbols of beauty and love; romantic pink sapphires; moonstones, associated with benevolence; or alexandrite, with its light-changing reflections.
July: ruby. A rare stone, the majestic ruby embodies passionate love and is a highly appreciated engagement stone! The ruby is traditionally a powerful symbol of courage and happiness in many cultures.
August: peridot. This pretty green stone is said to bring confidence, serenity and joy. These are ancient beliefs about a gem reputed to bring good luck and is also the symbol of love at first sight.
September: sapphire. Traditionally, blue sapphire is September's birthstone, but other colors are also possible, such as green sapphire. Its meaning is essentially fidelity, and sapphires have become the stone of choice for engagement rings.
October: tourmaline. The beautiful pink tourmaline is often the birthstone of October, with symbolism linked to self-confidence and love. There are, however, several other varieties, of which Paraíba tourmaline is the rarest.
November: citrine. This yellow stone embodies joy and optimism, as well as prosperity and success. In lithotherapy, it is coveted for combating negative energies and promoting good luck.
December: tanzanite. December's birthstone is a splendid blue, and tanzanite can even be tinted purple. A true good-luck charm, it embodies serenity, wisdom and compassion.
