Our Sourcing of Precious Stones
At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to providing the finest gemstones through rigorous and ethical sourcing.
We have developed three main sourcing methods to guarantee the quality and traceability of our gems: directly from the mines, via brokers and from renowned cutting centers. Find out more about our methods below.
Directly to the mine
We favor direct partnerships with the mines, enabling us to obtain raw gemstones directly from the source.
Our partnerships span the globe, notably in Africa (Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya), Vietnam and Sri Lanka. By carefully selecting gems according to their quality, we then have them cut by our workshops in France and Bangkok, ensuring total control over the transformation process.
Through local brokers
Our partnerships with international brokers enable us to acquire gemstones over a wide geographical area.
These brokers, based in Africa, Brazil, Colombia and Vietnam, scour vast territories to source gems that meet our strict criteria of quality, traceability and price. The rough stones are then cut in our specialized workshops in France and Bangkok.
From the main size centers
We have offices strategically located in Jaipur, Bangkok and Beruwala (Sri Lanka).
These centers enable us to purchase pre-cut gemstones, such as Zambian emeralds in Jaipur, or sapphires and other assorted gems in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Thanks to these offices, we can respond precisely to our customers' specific requirements, offering a wide range of top-quality stones.
More competitive prices
These three levels of sourcing enable us to offer you the best gemstones at the best prices, while guaranteeing their origin and exceptional quality.
We are committed to maintaining these standards to continue satisfying our most demanding customers.
Through Reseller Merchants
The vast majority of traditional jewelers buy their stones from dealers in their own countries.
The result is a limited choice of products and, above all, prices that are far removed from market prices.
At the jeweller's
Once again, the majority of jewellers tend to favour selling their own stones to the detriment of customers' desires.
By offering only a limited selection, the jeweler inevitably leads to a choice. At Bonnot Paris, it's the customer who chooses, and we source the ideal stone for his or her needs.
Certification and Ethics: Our Commitments
Certification and ethics are essential pillars of Maison Bonnot Paris. Every stone we offer is certified by renowned independent laboratories such as GIA, AIGS, ICA, LFG and SSEF.
This guarantees the authenticity and quality of our gems. What's more, we're proud to know the origin of the majority of the stones we offer.
Many of them come from brokers located in extraction areas we know well, ensuring impeccable traceability and ethics.
Although ethics are at the heart of our commitment, we recognize that there is still much to be done in this area.
We are determined to continue our efforts to guarantee the responsible and ethical provenance of every stone.
Certification by partner laboratories
At Bonnot Paris, every gemstone passes through our certification laboratory.
Thanks to rigorous analysis and state-of-the-art equipment, we guarantee the authenticity, purity and quality of our gems. Each stone is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by our experts, ensuring our customers total transparency and absolute confidence in their investment.
Our Responsible Commitment
For ethical gemstones and transparent sourcing
At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to promoting responsible and transparent practices in the colored gemstone market, a predominantly artisanal sector where it is often difficult to trace the exact provenance of stones. Aware of this challenge, we do our utmost to guarantee the ethical origin of our gemstones, respecting the commitments and rules of responsibility set by the OECD.
We make it a point of honour not to source stones from politically dangerous areas such as Ethiopia and Burma. By collaborating with the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), we support artisanal mining cooperatives in improving their practices and working conditions. Although we can't guarantee 100% responsibility for all our stones, our proximity to the mines enables us to considerably reduce the risk of error compared to players far from the extraction sites.
In addition, we reinvest 1% of our sales from gemstone sales in development programs in partnership with ARM. This commitment enables us to contribute directly to improving living and working conditions in artisanal mining communities.
At Bonnot Paris, we firmly believe that transparency and accountability are essential to offering our customers exceptional jewelry while respecting strong ethical values.
The traceability of our precious stones
Transparency and precision at every stage
At Bonnot Paris, traceability is at the heart of our commitment to our customers. The more accurate information we obtain and the earlier we intervene in the value chain, the more we can guarantee the traceability of our gems. Working directly with the mines enables us to certify the exact origin of the stones, a crucial step in ensuring their authenticity and provenance.
For example, for a tourmaline, we are committed to providing precise information on its origin, specifying not only the country but also the region of extraction. Whether a tourmaline comes from Tanzania, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria or Mozambique, we strive to give the most precise location possible.
When we work with brokers, we ensure that we obtain and pass on this detailed information to our customers. In addition, when purchasing from major cutting centers, we systematically require information on the origin of the stones, and we carefully select our partners to eliminate any ambiguity regarding the provenance of our stones.
For certain stones, we use certification laboratories to confirm their origin. This process is standard practice at Bonnot Paris. Occasionally, we provide additional evidence to laboratories to correct and refine their traceability models, thanks to our in-depth knowledge and our own field investigations.
Our aim is always to offer maximum information to our customers in complete transparency. The rigorous traceability of our gemstones not only ensures their authenticity, but also reinforces the trust and satisfaction of our customers.
At Bonnot Paris, we firmly believe that transparency and precision are essential to offering exceptional jewelry and solid guarantees of its provenance.
Member of ICA
La Maison Bonnot is the only French jewelry house to be a member of the International Association of Colored Stone Merchants (ICA), testifying to our expertise and commitment to colored stones.
This affiliation enables us to forge lasting relationships with our suppliers, lapidaries and workshops, guaranteeing impeccable stone quality.
An ethical gemstone meets criteria of respect for the environment and human rights, concerning its extraction from a mine, but we also take into account where the stone is cut. Extraction is not the only stage in the process that can prove problematic, either for workers or ecological concerns.
There is no label to verify these criteria, as is the case for many consumer goods. The world of gems is extremely complex, not least because a country may be renowned for certain ethical gems, but not for others, or not in all its regions.
Nevertheless, a responsible stone is one that is, to begin with, traceable: we can trace its origin and obtain information on the area where it was quarried.
What everyone looks for first may vary, but conscientious professionals and discerning buyers generally want stones :
- from mines where workers are well treated, decently paid and safe;
- whose extraction has minimal impact on the environment;
- that are not linked to the financing of armed conflicts or terrorist groups.
The industry is not beyond reproach, but there are plenty of ethical gems out there. Around the world, many mining companies, mines, cutting centers and brokers are known for their efforts to meet ethical standards. Gem experts such as maison Bonnot prefer to turn to these suppliers.
When a buyer knows theorigin of a gemstone, which can be guaranteed by the seller, it is often possible to obtain further information. However, this guarantee does not always mean total transparency at every stage of the supply chain. If you want to buy eco-responsible and ethical gemstones, it's best to opt for short supply chains.
If you want to buy stones responsibly, the fewer players there are in the supply chain, the easier it will be to verify the practices of the various parties involved.
