Our Sourcing of Precious Stones

At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to providing the best precious stones through rigorous and ethical sourcing.

We've developed three main sourcing methods to ensure the quality and traceability of our gems: directly from mines, through brokers, and from renowned cutting centers. Discover our methods in detail below.

LEVEL 1

Directly at the mine

We favor direct partnerships with mines, which allows us to obtain rough gemstones directly from the source.

Our partnerships span the globe, including Africa (Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya), Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. We carefully select gemstones based on their quality and then have them cut by our workshops in France and Bangkok, ensuring complete control over the transformation process.

LEVEL 2

From local Brokers

Our collaborations with international brokers allow us to acquire precious stones over a wide geographical area.

These brokers, based in Africa, Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam, travel across vast territories to source gemstones that meet our strict criteria of quality, traceability, and price. The purchased rough stones are then cut in our specialized workshops in France and Bangkok.

LEVEL 3

From the main pruning centers

We have strategically located offices in Jaipur, Bangkok and Beruwala (Sri Lanka).

These centers allow us to purchase pre-cut gemstones, such as Zambian emeralds in Jaipur or sapphires and other various gemstones in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Thanks to these offices, we can precisely meet the specific demands of our customers by offering a wide range of high-quality stones.

The vast majority of traditional jewelers use dealers in their country to buy their stones.

This results in a limited choice of products and, above all, prices that are far removed from market prices.

Once again, the majority of jewelers tend to favor the sale of their own stones to the detriment of customer desires.

By offering only a limited selection, the jeweler inevitably influences the choice. At Bonnot Paris, it's the customer who chooses, and we source the ideal stone for their needs.

Certification and ethics are essential pillars of Maison Bonnot Paris. Each stone we offer is certified by renowned independent laboratories, such as GIA, AIGS, ICA, LFG, and SSEF.

This guarantees the authenticity and quality of our gems. In addition, we pride ourselves on knowing the origin of the majority of the stones we offer.

Many come from brokers located in extraction areas we know well, ensuring impeccable traceability and ethics.

Although ethics is at the heart of our commitment, we recognize that much remains to be done in this area.

Our Responsible Commitment

For ethical gemstones and transparent sourcing

At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to promoting responsible and transparent practices in the colored gemstone market, a primarily artisanal sector where it is often difficult to trace the exact provenance of stones. Aware of this challenge, we do everything possible to guarantee the ethical origin of our precious stones, respecting the commitments and responsibility rules set by the OECD.

We make a point of not sourcing stones from politically dangerous areas, such as Ethiopia and Burma. By collaborating with the weeding ring for Responsible Mining (ARM), we support artisanal mining cooperatives in improving their practices and working conditions. While we cannot guarantee 100% responsibility for all our stones, our proximity to the mines allows us to significantly reduce the risk of errors compared to those located far from the extraction sites.

Additionally, we reinvest 1% of our revenue from gemstone sales into development programs in partnership with ARM. This commitment allows us to directly contribute to improving living and working conditions in artisanal mining communities.

The Traceability of Our Precious Stones

At Bonnot Paris, traceability is at the heart of our commitment to our customers. The more accurate information we obtain and the earlier we intervene in the value chain, the more we can guarantee the traceability of our gemstones. Working directly with the mines allows us to certify the exact origin of the stones, a crucial step in ensuring their authenticity and provenance.

For example, for a tourmaline, we are committed to providing accurate information about its origin, specifying not only the country but also the region of extraction. Whether it is a tourmaline from Tanzania, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, or Mozambique, we strive to provide the most accurate location possible.

When working with brokers, we ensure that we obtain and share this detailed information with our clients. Additionally, when purchasing from leading cutting centers, we systematically request information on the origin of the stones and carefully select our partners to eliminate any ambiguity regarding the provenance of our stones.

For some stones, we use certification laboratories to confirm their origin. This process is standard practice at Bonnot Paris. Sometimes, we provide additional evidence to laboratories to correct and refine their traceability models, thanks to our in-depth knowledge and our own field investigations.

Our goal is to always provide our customers with maximum information and complete transparency. The rigorous traceability of our gemstones not only ensures their authenticity, but also strengthens our customers' trust and satisfaction.

What is an ethical stone ?

A ethical gemstone meets environmental and human rights standards regarding its extraction from a mine, but also takes into account the location where the stone is cut. Extraction is not the only step in the process that can be problematic, for workers or environmental concerns.

There is no label to verify these criteria, as is the case with many consumer goods. The world of gemstones is extremely complex, particularly because a country can be renowned for certain ethical stones, but not for other gems or not in all of its regions.

However, we can describe it as responsible stone a stone which is, to begin with, traceable : we can go back to its origin and have information on the area where it was extracted.

What each person looks for first can vary, but conscientious professionals and discerning buyers generally want stones that are:

• from mines where workers are well treated, decently paid and work safely;
• whose extraction has minimal impact on the environment;
• which are not linked to the financing of armed conflicts or terrorist groups.

When a buyer knows theorigin of a precious stone, which can be guaranteed by the seller, it is often possible to obtain more detailed information. However, this guarantee does not always mean complete transparency on each stage of the supply chain. To buy eco-responsible and ethical stones, as much as possible, the ideal is to favor short circuits.
